The Scoop on “Gluten-Free”
There are many gluten-free products on the market today, and some people mistake this trend to be a new weight-loss fad. This is not the case, however. Some Americans suffer from celiac disease, an auto-immune disorder related to the inability to process gluten, a compound found in wheat. The symptoms of celiac disease, including diarrhea, bloating, and anemia, are often confused with IBS. Celiac disease can be diagnosed by testing for antibodies, but there is currently no specific test for IBS. A gluten-free diet is the key to treating celiac and stopping the body’s self-destructive patterns, which can be difficult because of the prevalence of gluten in the American diet.
