Foods with a Function

Fairly new to the market are products called functional foods, which provide more than just basic nutrition. Probiotics and prebiotics are examples of functional foods. Probiotics are good bacteria that live in the gut, and prebiotics are what the probiotics eat so help to build their population in the gut. Both substances have various benefits, and you can get them in food or in supplements. Examples of foods that carry these substances are yogurt and miso. The Washington Times, August 5, 2009
