Popcorn: The Healthy Snack!
Popcorn contains high levels of polyphenols, antioxidants that may help reduce the risk of some disease, including heart disease and some cancers. Lead researcher Dr. Vinson from the University of Scranton suggests that the high levels of polyphenols are due to minimal processing and the fact that popcorn is a whole grain. There could be cause for concern regarding eating popcorn for those with diverticulosis, a condition that is common in older individual. It results from creation of a small mucosal pouch in the colon. These individuals should be cautious when they eat popcorn to particularly avoid eating the unpopped grains or popcorn crowns.
