Stress Linked to E. coli
A research team at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center has discovered a chemical receptor on the E. coli bacterium that detects stress hormones in the body. The hormones trigger the bacterium to release toxins that damage cells. The toxin release causes diarrhea in the patient. Finding the factors that activate the bacteria can make it possible to prevent the illness. HealthDay, March 19, 2009
