In Search of the Probiotic Effect
The effect of probiotics on the human digestive system is a controversial topic, and a new study in the journal Molecular Systems Biology recently concluded that probiotics change the way mice process bile acids, which break down fats. One of the arguments against the usefulness of probiotics is that there are too many bacteria in the digestive tract to be affected by probiotics. However, the lead researcher for the project, Jeremy Nicholson, states that this study indicates that probiotics do affect gastrointestinal flora. BBC News, Jan. 16, 2008
