CT Colonography as a Triage Instrument

A study in the journal Gut shows that CT colonography is not an efficient method of screening after a positive fecal occult blood test (FOBT). While the lead author stresses that the data do not speak to the effectiveness of CT colonography as a primary screening technique, they indicate that CT colonography does not detect enough lesions that are present in the colon. CT colonography is a type of CT scan that was initially proposed as a non-invasive test to replace colonoscopy for colorectal cancer screening. In this test, the computer reconstructs a three-dimensional image of the colon, based on sliced flat images that are obtained during an abdominal CT scan. Medscape.com, August 21, 2009
