State of Residence Correlated to State of Mind

A study to be published in the June issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicineshows that geographic location influences one’s mental state. About 7% of Hawaiians experience mental distress, compared to 14% of Kentuckians. Researchers looked at data from 1993 to 2001 and 2003 to 2006. They believe that untreated medical conditions, high unemployment, high-risk behaviors, and lower incomes contribute to the demographic differences. These data can be used to increase the awareness for the need to have more mental health services in certain areas. CNN.com, April 15, 2009
