Probiotic Solution for Diarrhea
The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal reports that Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 is an effective probiotic treatment for long-term diarrhea in infants and toddlers. This particular nondeadly strain of E. coli is known as EcN and was tested on a group of 151 infants and toddlers. Ninety-seven percent of the EcN group improved during the course of the study, as opposed to 62% of the placebo group, and researchers noted no undesirable side effects. The first responses to treatment were recorded at day 7, which leads researchers to suggest that probiotic treatment begin as early as possible. Medical Imaging, June 25, 2008
