No-Gluten Explosion: New Products on the Rise
People who are gluten intolerant will be pleased to note that more gluten-free products are making their way to grocery stores. The products do not contain wheat, barley, or rye, the major sources of gluten, which create intestinal mucosal damage. As more people are diagnosed with the disease each year, demand for gluten-free products rises, and market share increases. A March 2007 survey indicated that 8% of the U.S. population is interested in gluten-free products. Only in 2007, 700 new products hit the stores in comparison to 214 in 2004. New products unveiled at this year’s Natural Products Expo West in Orange County, California, include gluten-free pasta, brownies, cosmetics, and even dog treats. Las Cruces Sun News,August 13, 2008
