Broccoli Sprouts Control Harmful Bacteria

Broccoli sprouts contain sulforaphane, a compound that can act as an antibiotic, reducing the prevalence of H. pylori in the gut. H. pylori can cause ulcers and cancer in the stomach. In a study based on 50 cases in Japan, the levels of a marker of H. pylori were reduced by 40%. Similar experiments performed on mice showed similar results. Researchers say that while sprouts reduce levels of H. pylori, they do not destroy the bacteria completely, and so will not reduce the possibility of getting cancer. BBC News, Monday, 6 April 2009
