Stomach Bugs Linked to IBD

Diarrhea caused by Salmonella or Campylobacter cause an elevated risk of development inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which can last as many as 15 years after the initial infection. These results were published by a Danish team in the journal Gastroenterology. The study shows that after a bout of stomach infection, the patient’s risk of developing IBD increased threefold throughout the entire period of the study. Reuters, August 13, 2009
