New Food Allergy Study Could Attract More Funding to this Field
An international team of researchers, headed by Drs. Xiaobin Wang and Jacqueline Pongracic at Children’s Memorial Hospital is studying the causes of food allergies in children from Boston, Chicago, and Anhui province in China. While larger percentages of Chinese are allergic to shellfish and peanuts, fewer than 1% of Chinese have food allergies, compared with 4% in the United States. The researchers hope to determine why this disparity exists, using factors ranging from prenatal history to pets in the home. Parents are hoping that the study will garner more funding for this neglected area of research. The New York Times, December 8, 2008
