Heartburn Similar to Common Indigestion
A study performed in Genoa, Italy, shows that heartburn symptoms due to non-erosive reflux disease (NERD), which is type of acid reflux disorder in which there is no gross damage to the esophagus during endoscopy, despite existence of heartburn symptoms, is closely related to non-ulcer dyspepsia, which is a functional bowel disease. This may suggest that even the heartburn symptom in this group could be due to functional problems of esophagus rather than real acid exposure. The researchers suggest testing patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) to differentiate them from the true acid the group with NERD. Gut, May 20, 2009
