New IBS Diagnostic Method

A new sonographic method called sonoenteroclysis has been shown to be comparable to barium enteroclysis in helping assess and diagnose bowel disorders. Many similar techniques are unable to provide all necessary data and involved exposure to radiation. Researchers at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh, India, compared the results of sonoenteroclysis and barium enteroclysis in 50 patients. The findings indicate that sonoenteroclysis provides information similar to that of barium enteroclysis, as well as additional data about the bowel wall and other structures. The lead author of the study cites sonoenteroclysis as being “simple, non-invasive, without radiation, cheap,” and he recommends it as an initial investigation. Medical News Today, April 12, 2008
