Toxic Metals Found in Ayurvedic Medicines

A study conducted by Boston University found that ayurvedic medicines and traditional herbal mixtures made in India are often contaminated with lead, arsenic, or mercury. Ayurvedic medicine is an alternative to Western medicine and is a common practice in India. This alternative approach to conventional treatment is becoming popular in the West. This study found that 40 of the 200 remedies tested had levels of toxic metals that exceeded safety guidelines for the state of California. Many of the herbal ingredients of these remedies are imported from India, and the researchers believe that toxic metals in the soil are absorbed by the plants. Part of the problem is the lack of worldwide safety standards; Not to mention that the World Health Organization’s (WHO) acceptable standard for lead levels are 500 times those of California. Proponents of ayurvedic medicine fear that the result of this study may have a deterrent effect on prospective patients. Los Angeles Times, August 27, 2008
