The “Pros” of Probiotics
More food items these days are including good bacteria, called probiotics. According to dietitian Dee Harwell of Dynamic Dietetics, these bacteria increase the body’s immunity and the ability of the digestive tract to move its contents along. Over the past year, the number of Americans who eat products containing probiotics has risen from 10% in 2007 to 15% in 2008. Probiotics are beneficial during and after antibiotic treatments or when traveling outside the country. Another new product is food containing prebiotics. These foods contain undigestible oligosaccharides, which remain in the digestive tract to feed and promote the good bacteria.Chattanooga Times Free Press, October 29, 2008
